Jared Green describes his experience working with Certified Franchise Consultant Natalie Gold.
00:01 My name is Jared Green. I am from Gillette, Wyoming and I own a couple of businesses. I was looking at other business ventures to start and one of the suggestions that you had come up with, or one of the options, was healthy vending. That worked for us, my wife and I, because then I was able to keep my position at the chemical company, and have vending on the side, because of the flexibility that it offered.
00:38 I would like to think that I was blessed. I lucked into a good location and that cascaded into taking all four of my machines. From the very beginning, everything was going really really well, because Naturals 2 Go, in part of their agreement, they’re willing to find locations to put your machines for you.
1:03 I think the biggest part of it was the training program. It’s great to know what the biggest vending items are, what the demands are, suggestions from experienced people on what to put on the machine and what not to put in the machine. These are good things to know! Why have a whole bunch of failure at the beginning when you could have people tell you, “This, This and This is a big failure. Don’t do it!”. What to bring your stuff in to bring to locations, how do you move it around. Well, you get a big cart. Why figure all these things out when there've been many vending machine operators before me. Don’t reinvent the wheel, listen to people who have done it. How to stock the machine, how to put the bag in, make sure the corners aren’t folded so that the coils don’t get snagged on it.
1:53 The technology that they offer with going with a brand name company [like Naturals2Go] versus a Costco machine, I can access from my phone, my machine. I can see exactly what the inventory levels are, know what the sales are for the day, what the average was, if it’s down from the day before. Just having all of that on hand is really beneficial. When I go to refill the machines I know exactly what I need to refill the machine, there’s no guess work.
2:25 Yes I would do it again. It’s been a nice stepping stone to purchasing another existing business. It actually provided the extra money I needed to make that other sale happen. It’s just been really good. Vending is something that is easily scalable, you can always buy more machines and find new locations. Once you get established, it gets easier because of course, you know more about what you’re doing. Anything when you’re first starting out has its challenges. When you’re trying to learn it all, it’s hard to answer those tougher questions when people ask you. Now it’s been three years and I feel like a well-seasoned vending pro.
3:14 Six years ago if you were to have asked me, I never would have thought this is where I’d be at. It wasn’t a plan then but that’s how it worked out and I’m thankful for it. I even brought my oldest brother in. His wife does it now, she quit her job and how she runs the vending business. He saw what we were doing with the vending and was like, “Wow, that’s really awesome”! I brought him in and he started with 10 machines and got all of their machines placed. They like the flexibility of it and go service their machines when it works for them. Their kids are involved and that was something we thought about early on was the ability to bring our kids and start training them, so that they understand inventory management and how to mark things up based upon your cost, those business items. Just being able to teach your kids that is really rewarding.
4:21 You were really great! I always have a lot going on so you were patient with me and made sure that all of my questions were satisfied. You were never ever pushy or anything like that. You were just merely providing the information that I wanted to know more about. You provided a lot of great options and then gave me enough information that I could make a decision for my wife and I.
4:53 It was really smooth, it was really great. There’s going to be struggle, there’s going to be trials each step of the way. From figuring out if you’ve got enough money to do it, or to try to get the money or raise capital. There’s all different kinds of things after that point, but once you start, it’s worth it. If that’s your goal and you want it bad enough, you’ll figure out a way to make it happen.
